LANCE

Mr. Dresden had a wolfish grin plastered on his flawless face. His suit looked expensive and tailored, not some off-the-rack sort of thing. It was something more exotic and fashionable you’d find in a big city, made from the finest threads from around the world.

“Who the hell is this guy?” Sophie whispered into Lance’s ear.

“No idea.” Lance couldn’t take his sights off the arrogant man, who was smiling from ear to ear. “I don’t think he’s going to get the reception he’s hoping for, though. Not with that odd smile he’s got going on.”

Despite Mr. Dresden’s friendly disposition and politician’s smile, no one in attendance warmed to his inauthentic greetings and semi-hostile tone compared to that of Captain Revers.

“Residents of Dorrey. I’m happy to be standing here today and working hand in hand with both Mayor Thorn and Captain Revers. These are unprecedented times we are facing. I know that the outlook at the moment is grim and depressing, but together we will come out of this.”

Lance looked out over the crowd of hardened frowns staring at the smooth-talking man. Not a single person took the bait of the word salad he spewed and remained steadfast in their staunch position to hear something of value instead of more meaningless drivel.

Mr. Dresden continued. “As a prominent business within Dorrey, my company, Cornerstone Ventures, is committed to helping this wonderful community and ensuring that all are taken care of and that needs are met during this terrible catastrophe. As a show of our goodwill toward the residents, we will be working in conjunction with Mayor Thorn’s office to provide supplies, food, and water to those who need them.”

“Did he just say what I think he said?” Sophie asked.

Cheryl nudged Lance’s arm with her hand, having the same wide-eyed and gaped-mouth look as Sophie.

The crowd's haggard and defeated frowns lightened some. A few small claps sounded within the silence. Tensions seemed to ease. A spark of hope among the masses caught as more claps joined in unison.

But Lance wasn’t buying it. Hearing the business name spoken out loud floored him. Pieces started to fall into place. Strings were run from one conspiracy the family had to others they heard about from fellow farmers and their experiences. Not only was Cornerstone out in the open now, but they had a representative in town acting like some angel sent from above to pull them from the depths of despair.

Dresden kept the grin plastered on his face and continued propping up the evil company as some sort of savior. Lance wasn’t going to fall for such things, regardless of how convincing Dresden seemed.

As much as Lance knew he should keep his mouth shut, considering what happened to Mr. Anderson, who was escorted from the building, he couldn’t and wouldn’t remain silent. Not after what Cornerstone tried to do to his family.

“Is that the only reason you’re here?” Lance’s voice carried with ease throughout the gym, silencing any claps and shutting down Dresden, who zeroed in on Lance within seconds.
